How to verify a free campsite before you go
A free price tag is not enough. Check reservation rules, season, access road, toilet availability, water, fire restrictions, and closure notices.
Free campsites in Japan often exist because a municipality or local group maintains them for public use. They may be seasonal, closed after disasters, or limited to residents and registered users.
Before visiting, check the official source link, the latest municipal notice, the campsite name in Japanese, and recent map reviews. If the page says reservation required, do not assume walk-in camping is allowed.
For cyclists and walkers, confirm the last approach road and whether the campsite is reachable without a car. For drivers, confirm parking location and whether vehicles can enter the tent area.
